Ram Ki Paidi — Ayodhya's sacred riverfront

Ram Ki Paidi (Steps of Ram) is the beating heart of Ayodhya's riverfront — a 1.5 km stretch of 14 stone ghats built along the Saryu river where pilgrims have bathed, prayed and performed last rites for thousands of years. It is simultaneously a pilgrimage site, a social gathering place, a venue for Ayodhya's landmark laser show, and — at sunrise — one of the most visually arresting riverscapes in North India.

The 14 ghats of Ram Ki Paidi

Each ghat has a name, deity and tradition associated with it. The major ones:

GhatSignificance
SwargadwarHeaven's Gate — where Panchkosi Parikrama begins; most sacred for last rites
Ram Ki Paidi (main)Primary bathing ghat; largest and most visited
Kanak Bhawan GhatNear Kanak Bhawan temple; used by Kanak Bhawan pilgrims

Guptar GhatSouthern end; where Ram is said to have departed from earth (jal samadhi)

Morning ritual — the most important time to visit

The pre-dawn to morning period (4:30–8:00 AM) is Ram Ki Paidi at its most spiritually potent:

4:30 AM: Mangla Aarti begins at Ram Mandir; residents and early pilgrims head to the ghats simultaneously

5:00–6:00 AM (sunrise): The ghats come alive. Bells ring at riverfront temples. Oil lamps (diyas) are placed in small leaf boats and floated on the river. Priests begin morning chants. Pilgrims wade in for the holy bath.

The ritual sequence for pilgrims:

  1. Remove footwear at the ghat entrance
  2. Descend the stone steps to the water
  3. Take three dips facing east (toward the rising sun)
  4. Offer tarpan (water cupped in both hands, tilted toward the sun) with a prayer
  5. Dress in the changing enclosures nearby
  6. Proceed to Ram Mandir for darshan

Temperature of the Saryu:

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): 14–18°C — cold but bearable for the spiritually motivated
  • Summer (Apr–Jun): 22–28°C — comfortable for bathing
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep): Water is turbid after rains; swim carefully; currents stronger

Laser Sound & Light Show

The Ram Ki Paidi laser show is held at the Ram Ki Paidi amphitheatre — a permanent open-air venue right on the ghats. It is one of the most technically advanced sound and light shows in Uttar Pradesh.

Boat rides on the Saryu

Boats operate from the main Ram Ki Paidi ghat throughout the day. Two types:

Shared paddle/rowing boats — ₹60–100 per person:

  • 30–45 minutes
  • Follows the ghat waterfront
  • Typically 8–10 passengers

Private motorboat — ₹400–700 for the whole boat (4–6 people):

  • More flexible route and timing
  • Available for 30 or 60-minute rides
  • Some operators offer a sunrise special from 5:30–6:30 AM

What you see from the water:

  • The full sweep of all 14 ghats from river level
  • Ram Mandir shikhara visible above the city (especially clear in winter)
  • Smaller riverfront temples and their spires
  • Pilgrims bathing, priests performing puja, birds on the ghats
  • Evening view of the laser show projection area (lit from sunset)

Negotiate the price before boarding — there is no fixed counter for most boats. ₹80 per person for shared and ₹500 for a private 45-minute boat is a reasonable baseline.

Evening at Ram Ki Paidi

6:00 PM: The ghats light up. Marigold sellers and clay lamp (diya) vendors set up. Evening puja begins at ghat shrines.

6:30 PM: First-show ticket buyers queue at the laser show amphitheatre. The atmosphere near the ghats is at its most festive — bhajan performers, snack stalls, flower offerings on the water.

7:00–8:30 PM: Laser show timing depending on day.

Post-show: Many visitors walk along the ghat promenade after the show — a pleasant evening walk with views of the lit temple complex across the water.

Practical tips

  • Morning bath: Bring a change of clothes in a small bag; don't leave valuables unattended on the ghats
  • Laser show: Arrive early; sit center-stage for the best angle; the show has some strobe effects
  • Safety in water: Stick to the bathing areas marked off by ropes; don't venture into the open river current
  • Photography: The best light is the 20 minutes before and after sunrise — golden hour on water
  • Monsoon visits: The Saryu rises significantly Jul–Aug; some ghats may be submerged. Check locally.
