Gorakhpur sits on the eastern UP rail network and serves pilgrims from Bihar, Nepal, and eastern India. Gorakhpur Junction (GKP) is a major divisional hub with frequent connections to Ayodhya Dham (AY) on the Varanasi–Lucknow line.

Many devotees from Patna, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, and Nepal route through Gorakhpur. The 140 km hop to Ayodhya is one of the shortest inter-city legs on the Ramayana pilgrimage circuit.

By train — GKP to Ayodhya Dham

Gorakhpur Junction to Ayodhya Dham is a short, affordable leg with multiple daily departures.

Train typeTypical durationFare (approx.)
Intercity / passenger2.5–3 hrs₹100–150 (SL)
Express2–2.5 hrs₹150–400 (SL/3AC)

Morning departures (6:00–8:00 AM) let you reach Ayodhya by 9:00–10:00 AM — still early enough for a reasonable darshan queue if you have a Sugam pass.

Ayodhya Dham station is 1.5 km from Ram Mandir. E-rickshaw ₹20–30, auto ₹50–80.

Book on IRCTC. During festivals, reserve 30–60 days ahead — the Gorakhpur–Ayodhya route carries heavy pilgrim traffic year-round.

By road — NH-27

NH-27 connects Gorakhpur to Ayodhya via Basti and Faizabad (Ayodhya). The highway is generally good; allow extra time during monsoon (July–September) for occasional waterlogging near Faizabad.

Tips for Gorakhpur-origin pilgrims

  • Book Sugam Darshan before leaving Gorakhpur — mobile network is fine but temple slots fill while you travel.
  • Carry printed ID — Aadhaar mandatory for e-pass verification.
  • Festival season — Kartik Purnima, Ram Navami, and Deepotsav add 3–5× normal crowds. Add a buffer day or book hotels 2–3 weeks ahead.
  • Nepali pilgrims — Passport required for Sugam booking; immigration at Sunauli border is separate from temple entry.
