Varanasi to Ayodhya 2026 — Train, Road & Ramayana Circuit Guide

Varanasi to Ayodhya: 209 km, ~4–5 hrs by train or road. Complete transport guide — trains, buses, cabs — plus how to plan the perfect Kashi–Ayodhya Ramayana Circuit.

By train (recommended)

Board at Varanasi Junction (BSB). The destination is Ayodhya Dham (AYJ), the newly upgraded station ~1.5 km from Ram Mandir.

Tip: Book on IRCTC 60–90 days ahead for AC classes, especially on weekends and festival seasons. Overnight trains that depart Varanasi around 9–11 PM typically reach Ayodhya by 3–6 AM — ideal for an early Mangala Aarti darshan.

By road (cab or self-drive)

The NH27 corridor via Sultanpur is well-maintained. A pre-booked outstation cab is the most flexible option — depart at your own pace, stop at roadside dhabas, and arrive door-to-door near your hotel.

Pre-booked cab (one way)₹1,800–2,500AC sedan; haggle before boarding
Shared cab / SUV₹400–600 per seatFrom Varanasi bus stand area

Avoid driving during heavy monsoon months (July–August) when NH27 can see brief waterlogging around Sultanpur.

By bus

UPSRTC operates buses from Varanasi Cantt bus stand to Faizabad/Ayodhya. Journey is 5–6 hours, fares around ₹200–350. Buses are slower and less comfortable than trains but are the budget traveller's fallback when trains are full.

The Kashi–Ayodhya Ramayana Circuit

These two cities are the natural pair for any devout traveller. Varanasi (Kashi) is Shiva's city — the eternal city on the Ganges where every Hindu aspires to die. Ayodhya is Ram's birthplace, the most sacred site in the Vaishnava world. Together they form the beating heart of UP's Ramayana Circuit, a Government of India–endorsed pilgrimage trail.

Spiritual note: Tulsidas, the author of the Ramcharitmanas, lived in both Varanasi and Ayodhya — composing parts of the epic in each city. Walking both is to follow his footsteps.

Practical tips

  • Take the overnight train when possible: you save a night's accommodation and arrive energised for morning darshan.
  • Book return train early — trains out of Ayodhya on Sunday evenings fill up fast.
  • Varanasi hotels near the ghats are better for atmosphere; Ayodhya hotels near Ram Path are better for temple access. See Ayodhya hotels guide.
  • Weather: October–March is ideal for both cities. Avoid May–June (extreme heat in both) and heavy monsoon.

FAQ

What is the Ramayana Circuit?
An official pilgrimage trail connecting cities associated with Lord Ram — Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and beyond. Both cities have been upgraded under the circuit with better roads and heritage infrastructure.

Can I do Varanasi–Ayodhya in one day?
Technically possible by early morning cab or train — but rushed and unsatisfying for either city. A minimum 3-night trip (2 Varanasi + 2 Ayodhya) is strongly recommended.
