Sawan Jhula Mela Ayodhya 2026 — Dates, Best Temples & Monsoon Tips
Sawan Jhula Mela Ayodhya 2026 runs July 10–August 9. Idols of Ram-Sita placed on flower-decorated jhulas at Kanak Bhawan, Hanuman Garhi & Ram Mandir. Best days, timings & monsoon tips.
What is Sawan Jhula Mela?
Sawan (Shravan) is the holiest month of the Hindu calendar — the sacred season of rains, devotion and the beloved monsoon relationship between Ram and Sita. During Jhula Mela, the presiding deities of Ayodhya's temples are ceremonially placed on beautifully crafted swings — jhulas — decorated with jasmine, marigold, rose and mango leaves, refreshed daily throughout the month.
The spectacle is deeply devotional: devotees sing monsoon-season bhajans (called kajri and hindola), the air smells of wet earth and incense, and the sight of Ram-Sita swaying on flower jhulas in the lamplight is considered one of Ayodhya's most visually arresting darshans of the year.
Best temples for jhula darshan
| Temple | Jhula Highlight | Best Time |
|---|---|---|
| Kanak Bhawan | Gold-framed jhula of Ram-Sita; fresh flowers daily; evening aarti | 8–9 AM or 6:30 PM aarti |
| Hanuman Garhi | Hanuman ji on decorated swing; devotional atmosphere | 5–7 AM for quiet darshan |
| Ram Mandir | Grand jhula arrangement in sanctum precinct | Check VIP darshan slot |
| Tulsi Smarak Bhawan | Ramayana recitations + jhula display; less crowded | 9–11 AM |
| Nageshwarnath Temple | Shiva's month — extra Somwar gatherings, jhula of Shiva-Parvati | Monday mornings |
Kanak Bhawan jhula aarti
The evening Sandhya Aarti at Kanak Bhawan (~6:30 PM) takes on extra significance during Sawan — the sanctum is lit with hundreds of oil lamps and the priests perform a ceremonial swinging of the jhula to devotional singing. Arrive by 6:00 PM to secure a place in the inner courtyard. On Sawan Mondays, the queue forms from 5:30 PM.
Special events and processions
- Mani Parvat Parikrama: Processions leave from Ram Mandir precinct toward Mani Parvat hill during Sawan, especially on Mondays. Devotees carry flowers and offer prayers at the hilltop.
- Sawan Somwar (Monday) pujas: Every Monday is considered sacred to Lord Shiva during Sawan. Nageshwarnath Temple — the only Treta Yuga Shiva temple in Ayodhya — sees huge turnout on all four Sawan Mondays.
- Kajri singing: Traditional monsoon folk songs are performed in temple courtyards, particularly at Tulsi Smarak Bhawan and along Ram Ki Paidi in the evenings.
- Saryu ghats: The monsoon Saryu views are beautiful — swollen, fast-flowing, reflecting temple lights. Ghat aarti continues but the river is not safe for bathing when currents are strong.
Practical: visiting in monsoon
| Tip | Detail |
|---|---|
| Timing | 7:00–9:00 AM — coolest, driest part of the day in monsoon |
| Rain gear | Compact umbrella or rain poncho; plastic bag for footwear inside temple |
| Footwear | Non-slip sandals or rubber-soled shoes — ghats and temple steps get slippery |
| Crowds | Sawan Mondays can see 3–4× normal footfall at Kanak Bhawan — queue early |
| Transport | E-rickshaws are plentiful but scarce during heavy rain; consider walking the 700 m Kanak Bhawan–Ram Mandir circuit |
| Clothing | Light cotton (dries fast); carry a stole for temple entry |
