Ayodhya Packing List 2026 — Complete Checklist for Your Yatra
Complete Ayodhya packing checklist: documents (Aadhaar/ID for darshan pass), traditional clothing, footwear, cash, medicines and what NOT to bring to Ram Mandir. Covers summer, monsoon and winter packing.
Ayodhya packing checklist — everything you need
This checklist is designed for a 2–3 day pilgrimage trip to Ayodhya. Pack light — you will be walking significantly, removing shoes frequently and navigating through crowds.
Documents (must-haves)
| Item | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| ✅ Aadhaar card / Passport / Voter ID | Required for Ram Mandir aarti pass booking; ID check at security |
| ✅ Aarti pass printout / download | If pre-booked for Mangla, Shringar or Shayan Aarti at SRJBTKT |
| ✅ Hotel booking confirmation | Printed or downloaded offline (connectivity can be patchy) |
| ✅ Train / bus ticket | Printed or downloaded; IRCTC offline ticket in app |
| ✅ Travel insurance card (if applicable) | Emergency use |
| ✅ Emergency contacts written on paper | Phone battery dies; paper doesn't |
Clothing
Key rule: Traditional Indian attire is required at Ram Mandir and strongly preferred at all Ayodhya temples.
Men:
- 2–3 kurta-pajama sets (cotton — the most practical, available to buy in Ayodhya if needed)
- 1 dhoti-kurta (optional, but preferred for aartis and special puja)
- 1 warm shawl or light jacket (for early morning Mangla Aarti at 4:30 AM)
- Comfortable socks (2–3 pairs — worn at temple floors)
- Underwear for each day
Women:
- 2–3 salwar-kameez sets with dupatta
- 1 saree (optional — for special aartis)
- A dupatta for head covering (optional, respectful)
- Warm layer for early mornings (Oct–Feb especially)
General:
- Avoid: shorts, sleeveless tops, mini-skirts, ripped jeans, Western casual
- Avoid: leather belts, leather bags, leather shoes (banned inside temple)
- Fabric choice: cotton or linen for summer; light wool or fleece for winter
Footwear
| Type | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Slip-on sandals / chappals | You remove footwear at every temple — slip-ons save significant time |
| ✅ Cotton socks (2–3 pairs) | Temple floors get very hot in summer, cold in winter; socks are essential |
| ❌ Avoid leather shoes | Banned on temple premises |
| ❌ Avoid lace-up shoes | Time-consuming to remove/put on multiple times |
Bags
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Small cloth/jute tote bag | Fits prasad, offerings, water; allowed inside temple zone (check size) |
| ✅ Backpack (for hotel → train, not temple) | Leave large bags at hotel before going to temples |
| ❌ Large bags/trolley inside temples | Not allowed; use lockers near main gate |
Lockers are available outside Ram Mandir (₹20–50 per use). Deposit phones, wallet and large bags before entering.
Health & medicines
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Personal prescription medicines | Pharmacies available in city but may not stock specific medications |
| ✅ ORS sachets (2–3) | Dehydration risk on hot days; walking + crowds = fluid loss |
| ✅ Basic first aid kit | Blister plasters (extensive walking on marble/stone), antiseptic wipes |
| ✅ Antacid / digestion tablets | Rich temple prasad and street food can upset sensitive stomachs |
| ✅ Sunscreen (SPF 30+) | For summer visits; the open temple courtyards have no shade |
| ✅ Mosquito repellent (evening use) | Near river ghats at dusk |
| ✅ Pain relief (paracetamol/ibuprofen) | Long queues standing on hard floors cause fatigue |
Cash & payments
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Cash ₹1,000–2,500 per person per day | Autos, e-rickshaws, street food, prasad — most small vendors cash only |
| ✅ UPI-enabled phone | Mid-size restaurants and hotels accept UPI |
| ✅ Debit/credit card | For hotel checkout, train booking refills, larger purchases |
| ⚠️ | ATMs near Ram Mandir can be busy on weekends — withdraw on arrival |
Tech & devices
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Phone | Navigation, IRCTC tickets, aarti pass — but leave it at cloakroom before temple |
| ✅ Offline Google Maps downloaded | Signal inside the temple zone and old city can be weak |
| ✅ Power bank (10,000 mAh) | Long queues; phone dies quickly when using maps/camera |
| ✅ Charging cable | |
| ❌ Camera/DSLR inside sanctum | Not permitted inside the inner sanctum of Ram Mandir |
| ✅ Camera / phone camera | Permitted at ghats, outer temple courtyard, most other sites |
Temple essentials (offerings)
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| ✅ Small cloth bag for prasad | Receive and carry prasad from multiple temples |
| ✅ Flowers / marigold garlands | Sold near every temple gate; buy locally (₹20–50) |
| ✅ Small cash for donations | ₹11, ₹21, ₹51 — auspicious donation amounts in Indian tradition |
| ✅ Rudraksha mala or prayer beads | For personal use during aarti and darshan |
Seasonal adjustments
Summer (April–June)
- Lightweight cotton only
- Umbrella or wide-brim hat for sun
- Extra ORS and water; dehydration risk is real in Ayodhya's 40°C summers
- Sunglasses
Monsoon (July–September)
- Compact travel umbrella
- Quick-dry clothing
- Waterproof sandals or flip-flops
- Extra plastic bag for phone and documents
Winter (October–February)
- Warm jacket or shawl (essential for Mangla Aarti at 4:30 AM — temperatures can drop to 8–12°C)
- Thick socks (cold marble temple floors)
- Warm hat/cap (optional but useful in December–January)
What NOT to bring
| Item | Reason |
|---|---|
| ❌ Leather bags, belts, wallets | Banned in Ram Mandir; deposit at cloakroom |
| ❌ Mobile phone inside sanctum | Not permitted; deposit at cloakroom |
| ❌ Non-vegetarian food | Not permitted in the temple zone |
| ❌ Alcohol or tobacco | Strictly prohibited throughout the holy city |
| ❌ Sharp objects | Confiscated at security |
| ❌ Shorts or sleeveless clothing | Entry refused at main temples |
| ❌ Valuable jewellery | Unnecessary and theft risk in crowds |
