Getting around Ayodhya — your transport options

Ayodhya is compact — the main pilgrimage sites (Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Ram Ki Paidi) are within a 3–4 km radius. This makes local transport manageable and inexpensive. Here is everything you need to know.

1. E-rickshaw — the most common option

E-rickshaws (battery-powered three-wheelers) are the backbone of local transport in Ayodhya. They run on fixed shared routes, are inexpensive and navigate the narrow lanes near the temple zone more easily than autos.

Fare (shared)₹10–20 per seat

Most useful e-rickshaw routes:

  • Railway station → Hanuman Garhi area (via main road): ₹15
  • Ram Mandir area → Ram Ki Paidi: ₹15–20
  • Naya Ghat → Ram Janmabhoomi Marg: ₹10
  • Hotel Zone Road → temple area: ₹15–20

Tips: During peak hours (7–10 AM and 5–8 PM) e-rickshaws fill quickly. Be prepared to share with 5–6 others. They will not always take you door-to-door — know your landmark.

2. Auto-rickshaw — best for direct trips

Auto-rickshaws (three-wheelers) are faster, more flexible and go door-to-door. Rates are either metered (uncommon) or negotiated. For pilgrims arriving with luggage, autos are the better choice.

Approximate auto fares in Ayodhya:

RouteApproximate fare

Ayodhya Dham station → Ram Ki Paidi₹90–130
Ayodhya Dham station → Hanuman Garhi₹70–100

Ram Mandir → Mani Parvat₹60–80
Ayodhya → Faizabad (Gulab Bari)₹150–200
Ayodhya → Bharat Kund Nandigram₹350–450 (22 km)

Prepaid auto stand at Ayodhya Dham station: A prepaid counter outside the main exit sets fixed fares to key destinations. Use this if you're arriving by train and don't want to negotiate.

Negotiating tips:

  • Always agree on the fare before boarding
  • Fares increase ~25% after 9 PM
  • During festivals (Ram Navami, Deepotsav), fares double — negotiate firmly or use e-rickshaws instead
  • Apps like Just Dial or InDriver sometimes list local auto numbers for booking

3. Cycle rickshaw — short hops in the bazaar

Cycle rickshaws are still active near Hanuman Garhi and the Ramkot bazaar area. Useful for short 500m–1.5km hops in the congested temple zone where autos can't easily go.

4. Taxis and cabs

For city sightseeing: Local taxi drivers can be booked through your hotel or guest house for a half-day (4 hrs / 40 km: ₹600–900) or full-day (8 hrs / 80 km: ₹1,000–1,500) rate covering multiple sites.

Ola: Works in Ayodhya. Best for:

  • Airport to city (₹350–500)
  • Intercity rides to Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj
  • Late-night travel when autos are scarce

Rapido (bike taxi): Available in some parts of the city — useful for solo travellers moving quickly between close sites.

For intercity trips:

RouteTaxiTrainBus
Ayodhya → Lucknow (135 km)₹1,800–2,200₹180–600₹200
Ayodhya → Prayagraj (165 km)₹2,200–2,800₹150–450₹250
Ayodhya → Varanasi (200 km)₹2,500–3,200₹200–600₹300

5. Tempo/shared tempo

Large shared tempos (covered trucks with bench seats) run on fixed routes between Ayodhya and its satellite areas:

  • Ayodhya ↔ Nandigram (Bharat Kund): ₹25–35 per seat
  • Ayodhya ↔ Faizabad market area: ₹20–30

Tempos leave when full from stands near the bus station and Naya Ghat.

There is no pre-paid auto stand at the airport (as of June 2026) — use the taxi counter inside arrivals or book an Ola from the parking lot.

Walking in Ayodhya

Surprisingly, walking is one of the best ways to experience the Ramkot area:

  • Ram Mandir → Hanuman Garhi: 700m, 10 min walk
  • Hanuman Garhi → Kanak Bhawan: 300m, 5 min walk
  • Kanak Bhawan → Sita Ki Rasoi: 200m, 3 min walk
  • Ram Mandir → Ram Ki Paidi: 1.8 km, 22 min walk

The main Ramkot circuit (Ram Mandir → Hanuman Garhi → Kanak Bhawan → Sita Ki Rasoi) is entirely walkable and many pilgrims prefer to do it on foot as part of their darshan.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash: most auto and e-rickshaw drivers do not accept UPI or cards
  • Avoid festival days for negotiations: Ram Navami and Deepotsav see 3–5x normal demand — fares spike significantly
  • No autos allowed in the inner temple zone: You will need to walk the last 200–500m to Ram Mandir — vehicle access is restricted near the main gate
  • Luggage: If you have large bags, an auto is strongly preferred over e-rickshaw — e-rickshaws have no luggage space
  • Night travel: Autos and e-rickshaws are less frequent after 10 PM; arrange return transport before 9:30 PM or book via Ola
