Spiritual Significance & History

Nageshwarnath Temple is the premier Shaivite shrine in Ayodhya, situated adjacent to Ram Ki Paidi. According to ancient lore, Lord Rama's son Kusha lost his divine armlet in the Saryu river, which was retrieved by a Nag-Kanya (serpent maiden) who was a Shiva devotee. In gratitude, Kusha established this grand Shiva temple.

The sanctum sanctorum houses a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam. It is the central focal point during Mahashivratri and Shravan month, when hundreds of thousands of Kanwariyas offer holy Saryu water.

Essential Tips for Devotees

  • Perform Jalabhishek in the early morning (05:30 AM – 08:00 AM) right after taking a holy dip at Ram Ki Paidi.
  • During Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays, expect long queues; general entry remains free.
  • Located just a 2-minute walk from the evening Saryu Aarti venue.
