Pilgrims take a holy dip in the Saryu to mark the sun's transit into Makara.
Makar Sankranti marks the sun's transit into Makara (Capricorn) and is observed across Ayodhya with a holy dip in the Saryu at Ram Ki Paidi and Saryu Ghat, followed by temple visits and charitable giving of til-gud (sesame-jaggery sweets).
Unlike most Hindu festivals, the date is fixed to the solar calendar (14 January most years), making it one of the few Ayodhya observances that doesn't shift year to year.
Pilgrim tips
Winter mornings are cold - carry warm, easily removable layers for the Saryu dip.
